Topic Latest Methodology and Practices on Business Continuity and Operational Resilience
Speaker Mr. Willem Hoekstra, President of Continuity Group Ltd

Willem A. Hoekstra M MBA FBCI CISM, has been running Crisis Management (CM), Business Continuity Management (BCM) and Operational Resilience (OpRes) programs in the financial industry for the past two decades, including ABN AMRO Bank, RBS, Société Générale and Nomura Asia ex-Japan.

Since 2019, working as a specialist consultant on behalf of Kroll, Thales and Continuity Group, he has delivered CM, OpRes & BCM projects in a wide variety of industries around the globe, from integrated hospitality resorts, global manufacturing, insurance and banks to logistics and airlines.

Willem has organized, moderated and facilitated many, often cyber-related, crisis management training exercises, in all possible guises.

He is a Fellow of the Business Continuity Institute (FBCI) and after many years as Chapter leader of the BCI-Hong Kong and Macau chapter, he currently serves as non-executive director on the global BCI Board.

Willem has presented and/or participated at numerous conferences and seminars around the globe. For many years, Willem was also the Chair of the Hong Kong Financial Services BCM forum, where he inaugurated the WISE industry-wide Crisis Management exercises.

Willem holds an MBA, as well as a Master’s degree in Communication Science, and a Propeadeuse degree in Economics. Furthermore, he is certified as information security manager CISM. In his limited spare time, he enjoys flying a single-engine aircraft as a Private Pilot License holder.

Synopsis Willem Hoekstra will explore the impact of Emerging Technologies on Operational Resilience and Business Continuity (OpRes/BC).

The first challenge is that standards and definitions for OpRes/BC vary significantly between jurisdictions, industry organizations and even ISO-sections.

Emerging technologies like cloud computing, IoT, and blockchain offer significant benefits, but also introduce new dependencies and risks. The question remains whether traditional BC approaches and/or more recent OpRes methods can meet these challenges.

AI, in particular, affects OpRes/BC in multiple ways. If AI is used for critical business services, OpRes/BC must be ensured. Conversely, AI can help identify priorities and develop OpRes/BC solutions where needed.

In the end, AI won’t eliminate all jobs, but it will shift the landscape from roles without AI to those with AI.
